Planning Your Trip
When packing for your trip to Sodwana please take a moment to look at our list of commonly forgotten items
Dive Cards/Logbooks, we need to see them before you dive. If you have misplaced them let us know and we can help you find new copies.
Dive Equipment – please double check everything you think is in your dive bag is really there.
Set your computer to sea level. Whilst some computers will do this automatically, not all do. Try not to bend your computer by diving at the wrong setting.
Check your dive insurance is up to date, we recommend Divers Alert Network.
If you are prone to seasickness see your Doctor for medication before you leave. Also alert us and we can give you the best seat on the boat.
If you are taking malaria medication for your trip, make sure you start it as prescribed often sometime before you arrive.
When to Visit
There is no best time of year to dive in Sodwana. With a temperature range of 20-28 degrees, the water is never cold. We have a lot of humpback whales in winter time, Whalesharks we have all year round, but they are normally easier to find in summer.
One thing to consider when planning your trip is the air temperature and humidity, remembering that Southern Hemisphere seasons are opposite those of the Northern Hemisphere, our winter is your summer. To visit from a cold winter in a North European Country to our hot humid summer maybe uncomfortable for some. Contact us to check. However, Sodwana Bay Lodge is air conditioned so your evenings will be pleasantly cool.
Accommodation – Sodwana Bay Lodge
We partner with Sodwana Bay Lodge to provide not only the best diving, but the best accommodation in Sodwana Bay.
The lodge rooms feature Satellite DStv, Air Con, phones, Bar Fridges, en-suite shower and toilet and ceiling fans.
They are serviced daily, and include complimentary tea and coffee making facilities. The chalets are situated right in the heart of the Lodge’s diving and fishing centres and are adjacent to the volleyball court, Leatherback restaurant, swimming pool and bar.
We recommend that you stay at Sodwana Bay Lodge. The accommodation, food and service are the best in town, ensuring you are well rested before your dives. The Lodge also provide excellent dive/dinner/room packages.
We will of course welcome divers who are not staying at the Lodge, but will give lodge guests preference over very busy times.
Getting to SBLSC
International flights arrive into Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town from all over the world. The fastest way to arrive from any of these places is to book a flight to Richards Bay (via Johannesburg).
If you are flying into Johannesburg, the fastest way to arrive is to book an internal flight to Richards Bay then to hire a car and drive to Sodwana (roughly 2 hours).
If you are flying into Durban (King Shaka International) then hire a car and drive to Sodwana, this will take you a little less than 4 hours).
Cape Town, whilst a world class destination is not the ideal arrival spot for a quick trip to Sodwana. It is possible to book an internal flight to Richards Bay and then hire a car, but the only real reason to visit Cape Town first is to visit Cape Town first.
As an internal traveller Sodwana is poorly served by Public Transport apart from the ubiquitous taxis. Whilst we would not recommend the use of taxis it is possible for the brave at heart.
Sodwana Bay Lodge can organise transfers from airports, although these tend to be expensive and a hired car may be cheaper and offer more freedom. Feel free to contact us for more information.
